FAQ on the PN Reference Calibrator with Salt Particle Generator
What is the PNR 2000 K PN reference calibrator?
The PNR 2000 K is a portable reference instrument from KNESTEL for calibrating PN (particle number) measuring instruments. It is the successor model to the PNR 1000K and combines a NaCl aerosol generator (0.9% saline solution) with integrated monitoring of the relevant particle parameters and supports the calibration of multiple devices in parallel.
What reference areas does PNR 2000 K cover?
-
Reference concentration: 50,000 to 2,000,000 #/cm³
-
Average particle size: 70 nm or 80 nm with ±5 nm stability
-
Optional: 50 nm
-
Flow rate: at least 7 l/min (higher rates available upon request)
Why is calibration of PN measurement devices required?
Effective January 1, 2023, the emissions test (HU/AU) for Euro 5b/Vb and Euro 6/VI vehicles with compression-ignition engines, in accordance with EU regulations, will also include the measurement of soot/particles. The calibration process and conformity assessment of particle counters must comply with specific guidelines, including the AU device calibration guideline [VkBl 11/2021-No. 131] and accreditation according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. The PNR 2000 K is the successor model to the PNR 1000 K from KNESTEL, and both devices were developed to meet these requirements.
What are the key features and highlights of the PNR 2000 K?
The key benefits and features of the KNESTEL reference calibrator include:
- Ability to calibrate multiple particle counters simultaneously.
- Durable carrying case with space for additional accessories.
- Traceability in accordance with EN 17025 – ideal for official emissions testing.
- Built-in self-test function (without particle generation).
- Monitoring of the average (mean) particle size.
- Use of a particle counter that does not require hazardous materials or expensive consumables.
- Aerosol generation using an inexpensive saline solution (NaCl).
- Low maintenance requirements thanks to contactless measurement technology and so-called Clean Charging Technology.
The PNR 2000 offers several key improvements:
- Significantly shorter warm-up period
- Aerosol generation using a 0.9% NaCl solution instead of harmful soot
- Reduced maintenance requirements thanks to Clean Charging Technology
- Compact, rugged housing with integrated tie-down points
- Optional battery operation for mobile applications
- Simultaneous calibration of multiple devices is possible
- Continuous monitoring and control of the average particle size
-
Integrated particle counter with self-test function
-
High stability even when ambient humidity changes
In what scenarios or areas is the PNR 2000 K used?
- Calibration of exhaust gas particle analyzers (PN devices)
- Initial calibration in the laboratory
- On-site calibration in auto repair shops
- Used as a testing and calibration tool during repairs
- Parallel calibration of multiple devices
- Test benches and development environments
- Laboratory ApplicationsMobile Service and Field Applications
- Quality Assurance and Validation of Measurement Systems
What are the compliance / normative standards that this calibrator meets?
- AU Instrument Calibration Guideline [VkBl. 11/2021-No. 131] for the calibration of particle counters.
- Requirement of VkBl. 24/2020, No. 190 for calibration by a service provider accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025.
Does the device require a lot of maintenance?
Maintenance requirements are relatively low, but some work is necessary to ensure proper operation:
- Regular cleaning or flushing of the NaCl generator nozzle.
- Check hoses, containers, or connections for leaks.
- Replace or refill the desiccant (silica gel) as needed (according to the manual).
